Albany, Illinois (Sangamon Co.)

City: Albany

State: Illinois

Lat/Long: 40.122949, -89.463301

In 1836, Abraham Lincoln surveyed and laid out the town of Albany on the western bank of Salt Creek, in what was then Sangamon County. In 1839, a new county was carved out of Sangamon, placing the town's site in the northwest corner of present-day Logan County. Albany was a "paper town," founded during a time of intense land speculation in Illinois, and likely never had any residents.
