AN ACT to change the name of Watson James Philley.
1Name changed to the name of Watson James Philley Cyrus and powers
Sec.[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly, That Matthew Cyrus, of the county of Morgan, having adopted Watson James Philley as a son, it is hereby declared that the name of the said Watson James Philley be changed to Watson James Philley Cyrus, and by that name he is hereby declared able and capable in law to purchase, hold,
grant and convey real and personal property, and to sue and be sued, and to do all
other acts as fully and effectually as he could do by his former name.
Approved 16th January, 1837.
1On December 19, 1836, William Weatherford presented to the Senate a petition from Matthew Cyrus, requesting a name change for his adopted son. The Senate referred the petition to a select committee. On December 21, Weatherford,
speaking on behalf of the select committee, reported SB 14 in the Senate. The Senate passed the bill without amendment on December 23. The House of Representatives passed the bill without amendment on January 9, 1837. On January 16, the Council of Revision approved the bill and the act became law.
