A Bill for an act to divide certain moneys therein named between the counties of Cass, Menard, Mason[,] & Sangamon.
1Sec[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois, represented in theGeneral Assembly. That the appropriation of Two Thousand Dollars made by the General Assembly of the State of Illinois (by an act approved the 19th day of January 1829) for the purpose of improving the navigation of the Sangamon River2, and paid over to the county commissioners of Sangamon County be divided between the counties of Cass, Menard, Mason and Sangamon, in the following proportions towit: To the county of Cass the sum of Three hundred dollars, To the county of Menard the sum of Six hundred dollars To the county of Mason the sum of Four hundred and fifty dollars and to the county of Sangamon the Sum of Six hundred and fifty dollars
Sec. 2. The county commissioners of Sangamon county, are hereby authorised and required, to pay over to the County Commissioners of Cass, Menard[,] and Mason, or their order, on or before the first day of May 1842, their respective proportions,
as specified in the first section of this bill, and it shall be lawful for the commissioners
of each of said counties, to use the moneys herein specified for the purposes of internal
improvements

in their respective counties Provided that said counties shall at any time hereafter,
when it may be required for the improvement of the Sangamon River, pay over their respective sums to such person or persons, as may hereafter be authorized
by Law to receive the same.
Sec.[Section] 3. This act to take effect from and after its passage.

1On January 7, 1841, John Bennett in the House of Representatives presented the petition of citizens of Menard County, relating to the division of a sum of money. The House referred the petition to
a select committee. In response to this petition, Bennett of the aforesaid select
committee introduced HB 135 in the House on January 25. The House referred the bill
to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on February 9
with amendments as a substitute, in which the House concurred. On the motion of Abraham Lincoln, the House indefinitely postponed further consideration by a vote of 43 yeas to 31
nays, with Lincoln voting yea.

Section twelve appropriated $1000 to Sangamon County, and section thirteen stipulated the county would receive an additional $1000 from
any surplus revenue from the sale of the Vermilion Saline Reserve.
