Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring herein, That our Senators in Congress be instructed, and our Representatives requested to use their best exertions to procure an appropriation for the further completion of the Cumberland road from Terre-haute, Indiana, to Vandalia,2 Illinois; and that the Governor be requested to transmit a copy of the above resolution to each of our Senators and Representatives in Congress.
1On December 19, 1838, Harmon Alexander introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives, and the House adopted it the same day. On December 20, the Senate amended the resolution by striking out “Vandalia” and inserting “Alton” in lieu thereof. On December 21, the House referred the resolution to a select committee, along with another resolution concerning the completion of the Cumberland Road. On February 15, 1839, the select committee reported back with a new resolution.
