Born in New Marlboro, Massachusetts, John C. Brigham was a Protestant clergyman. He graduated from Williams College in 1819, then entered Andover Theological Seminary. After completing his course of study at Andover in 1822, he traveled to Mexico and South America to study the state of Protestantism there. He remained abroad for four years, and Protestant chaplaincies were established in Rio de Janeiro and other locations as a result of his work. He returned to the United States in 1826, and became corresponding secretary for the American Bible Society, a position he held until 1862. He continued deepening his theological education over time, receiving his Doctor of Divinity degree from Andover Theological Seminary in 1832. In August 1840, he married Maria E. Evertson, with whom he had seven children. He lived in Brooklyn, New York at least as early as 1841, and was moderately prosperous, owning $6,000 in real estate by 1850.
