Richard Briggs, Jr., was the oldest child of Richard, Sr., and Huldah R. Briggs, and older brother of Charles Briggs, Henry Briggs, and Mary Bradford. Little is known about his life before March 1840, when he married Rebecca Robinson in Bond County, Illinois. In May of that same year, he purchased forty acres of public land north of Greenville, Illinois. By 1850, he was living with his brother Henry in Bond County.
