Brown, Joseph B.

Joseph B. Brown was a physician, U.S. Army surgeon, and U.S. Army officer who achieved the brevet rank of brigadier-general. Upon graduating from Albany Medical College in 1845, he was appointed physician for Clinton Prison in New York. In 1848, he served as a surgeon in Detroit. In April of that year, he married Catharine R. Crawford, with whom he had four children. In June 1849, he was appointed surgeon in the U.S. Army. Prior to the Civil War, Brown was stationed in Oregon, Texas, and the Washington Territory. During the Civil War, he initially served in the east with the Army of the Potomac. Later, he was promoted to chief officer in the Surgeon General's Office and served in the west with the Army of the Cumberland until the end of the war.
