Dorrell lived in Sangamon County by 1840, when he gave his occupation as a farmer. He was also a partner in William Porter & Co., a lumber and hardware supply store in Springfield. At least three times in the 1840s, Dorrell retained Abraham Lincoln and his partners to represent him in legal cases in the Sangamon County Circuit Court. By 1856, Dorrell lived in Cass County.
