Fell, the brother of Jesse W. Fell, was a wheelwright who learned his trade in Maryland and Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1830, he married Eleanor Evans in Pennsylvania, with whom he had twelve children. In 1835, they moved to Bloomington, Illinois, where Fell worked as a house-builder. In 1850, Fell was a McLean County farmer with real estate valued at $800. In 1860, Fell was a master carpenter and owned $4,700 in real estate, with a personal estate of $500.
