Francis moved to Springfield, Illinois, in 1831 with his brother, Simeon Francis. In April 1838, J. Newton and another brother, Allen, became partners with their brother Simeon, publishing the Whig-leaning Sangamo Journal. Francis married Julia A. Constant in 1842, and they had one child together before Francis died in a hunting accident while on a business trip.
