James S. Goode was a lawyer, prosecuting attorney, and mayor. Goode read law and gained admission to the Ohio bar in 1848. He commenced the practice of law in Springfield, Ohio as a partner in the law firm of Anthony & Goode with Charles Anthony. In November 1848, he married Mary Ann Cowan, with whom he had at least three children. In 1850, he was practicing law and owned real property valued at $2,500. At that time, he was also the secretary of the Springfield Gas & Coke Company. Goode won three one-year terms as mayor of Springfield in 1854, 1855, and 1856. From 1858 to 1862, he served as a prosecuting attorney for Springfield. In 1860, he owned real property valued at $10,000 and had a personal estate of $10,000.
