In 1819, Grable and his parents moved to Gallatin County, Illinois. In 1832, he began purchasing federal land in part of the county that would later become Saline County. In 1839, Grable married Rachel Ann Crawford. He re-married to Willa Miller in 1847. In 1850, Grable lived with his family near Raleigh, where he was a farmer and owned $2,000 worth of real estate.
