Named for the Saline River and surrounding salt springs, Saline County was formed by the Illinois General Assembly in 1847 out of the northwest portion of Gallatin County. In November 1847, county residents selected Raleigh as the county's seat. In 1859, the county seat was relocated to Harrisburg.
