Greenman first moved to McLean County, Illinois, in 1829, settling there with his parents and siblings. He became a carpenter and for several years, worked in Lee County, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Greenman returned to settle permanently in McLean County in 1842. He entered the mercantile trade, which he continued until 1858. In 1848, he married Martha A. Pearce, and together they had eight children. In 1850, Greenman owned $3,000 worth of real property. By 1860, Greenman had accumulated $5,000 in real property, with a personal estate of $10,000.
