Samuel Haller was a farmer and landowner in Montgomery County, Illinois. Samuel and his wife Mary were living in Ohio in April 1836, when Samuel purchased approximately 1,530 acres of public land southeast of Hillsboro in what would become East Fork Township. Samuel moved his family to Montgomery County in 1836, and he commenced farming. In addition to agriculture, Samuel involved himself in local politics. In 1840 and 1842, Haller sought unsuccessfully to represent Montgomery County in the Illinois House of Representatives, losing in both elections to the candidate of the Democratic Party. In 1850, he owned real property valued at $2,000. By 1860, the value of his real property had increased to $10,500, and he had a personal estate of $1,750.
