In 1834, Hays married Nancy Hall Taylor, a widow, in Sangamon County, Illinois, and together they had four children. They initially settled in western Sangamon County, where Hays farmed, before moving to rural Christian County. In 1850, Hays was farming near Moweaqua, Illinois, and he owned $1,300 worth of real estate.
