In 1840, Hill was the head of a Springfield, Illinois, academy or grammar school with twenty-seven scholars. In March 1842, he was found guilty of manslaughter and ordered to serve one year and ten days in prison. Abraham Lincoln authored and signed a petition for Hill's pardon, which Governor Thomas Carlin granted in April 1842.
