Born in Ridgefield, Connecticut, Roswell Keeler was a merchant and station agent. While living in New York, New York and working as a merchant, he married Mary Eliza Plant in September 1820 in Utica, New York. The couple had at least six children together and eventually moved West, settling in La Salle, Illinois, where Keeler worked as a station agent for the Illinois Central Railroad. By 1860, he and his wife were still living in La Salle.
