Lindsay married Mary Glass in Kentucky, and together they had five children. He remarried to Sophia Lanterman, with whom he had two more children. Lindsay moved his family to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1819. He settled just west of Springfield and established a farm. In 1821, he was appointed a justice of the peace by the County Commissioners Court. Politically, Lindsay was a Whig.
