Lorshbaugh lived in Springfield, Illinois, as early as 1840, when he became a founding member of the Springfield Odd Fellows Lodge. In 1841, he became a founding member and deacon of the English Lutheran Church in Springfield. By 1850, he had moved his family to Mt. Pulaski, Illinois, where he was a merchant. By 1860, he owned $3,500 worth of real estate and $1,000 worth of personal property.
