In April 1839, Loughry purchased approximately eighty acres of public land along Crooked Creek, southwest of Centralia in Clinton County, Illinois. In December 1839, Loughry married Martha Hall. In 1850, he was a tanner and owned $1,200 in real estate. In 1852, he bought eighty acres of public land near Carlyle. In 1860, Loughry was farming and owned real estate valued at $8,000, with a personal estate of $1,500.
