In 1818, Margrave married Celia Simpson in Caldwell County, Kentucky. By 1820, the Margraves had settled in Gallatin County, Illinois, where Thomas Margrave farmed and worked in manufacturing. He soon began purchasing federal land in part of the county that would later become Saline County. In 1842, Margrave retained Abraham Lincoln to represent him in the appeal of a suit involving the seduction of his unmarried daughter.
