McHenry, George (Dubuque, IA)

George McHenry was a hotelier, shoemaker, town official, and government worker in Dubuque County, Iowa. In 1846, he owned the Western Hotel in Dubuque. By 1850, however, he was working as a shoemaker. He and his wife, Sarah, had four children by then, and he owned $1,500 in real estate. He was active in the town, holding positions as a school fund commissioner and town alderman in the 1850s. He was appointed register for the U.S. General Land Office in Dubuque in 1853, and maintained the position through 1855. By 1860, he owned $7,500 in real and personal property.
