Died: 1874-08-14 Monmouth, Illinois

James H. Reed, teacher, editor, and farmer, taught school early in life in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He moved to Mercer County, Illinois, in 1852 and spent time working in manufacturing before returning to teaching. In 1856, he became the editor of the Oquawka Plaindealer. The next year he removed to Aledo, Illinois and established the Aledo Record. He continued as an editor until 1863 when he took up farming in Iowa. However, failing health caused him to return to Illinois, this time Monmouth, and edit once again, purchasing half-interest in the Atlas. He strongly supported the Republican Party with his words, both written and spoken.

Reed married Mary Amanda Stackpole in 1850 and the couple had six children. After Mary's death, Reed remarried to May Tucker.
