In 1821, Short married Elizabeth Rettinghouse in Madison County, Illinois. In the early 1820s, he emigrated with a family group from southern Illinois to a part of Sangamon County that would later become Menard County. In 1827, he served in the Illinois militia in the Winnebago War.
