Thompson moved with his parents to Christian County, Kentucky in 1812. In December 1831, Thompson married Louisa Hazard. Four years later, the family moved to McLean County, Illinois, settling in Bloomington, Illinois. Louisa died in 1838, and Thompson remarried on September 27, 1841, to Mary Dodge in Madison County, Illinois. Religiously, Thompson was a Baptist, being one of the first to organize and establish the First Baptist Church of Bloomington. In 1850, Thompson was a carpenter in Bloomington, where he lived with his wife and four children, and owned $1,500 in real property.
