Gilbert L. Thomas was a resident of Chicago when he married Maria Logan in 1849. The pair moved to Pekin, Illinois, that same year, where Thomas worked as a druggist, stationer, and bookseller. He served as an alderman in Pekin in 1855. At the time of the 1860 census, Thomas described himself as a farmer. In 1862 he relocated to the nearby town of Washington and continued to work as a druggist. Thomas moved permanently to Iowa in 1864, living most of the remainder of his life in Columbus City. He was survived by five children.
