Hon A LincolnDear Sir
Some of our friends at Pekin have written me from there to see if we could get you to change the day you are to be there to the 6th and try to get Trumbull to come to. I have written him about it also that we have changed days with our Lacon friends when Trumbull was to be here as we wish to go the 7th to Galesburgh en masse and from Lacon they would not, if you will consent to change from the 5th to the 6th it will suit them as they wish to come up &c[etc.] hear Trumbull. let me know &c we will give notice of it2
Yours in hasteN C Geer

1Nathan C. Geer wrote and signed this letter. He also wrote Abraham Lincoln’s name and address on the envelope shown in the second image.
2If Lincoln replied to this letter, his response has not been located. Geer wrote Lincoln at least two other letters related to the election campaign of 1858 prior to this letter.
At the time of this letter, Lincoln was running as the Illinois Republican Party’s candidate to replace incumbent Democrat Stephen A. Douglas in the U.S. Senate. Lincoln delivered a campaign address in Pekin, Illinois, on October 5. Lyman Trumbull was not present. On October 6, Lincoln traveled from Peoria, Illinois, to Galesburg, Illinois, where he was scheduled to debate Douglas the next day.
Lincoln had agreed to Douglas’ proposal for the schedule for the Lincoln-Douglas Debates on July 31. Newspapers in Illinois published the debate schedule at least as early as August 6. By that time, it is likely that Lincoln had little flexibility in his travel and speaking schedule in the dates closest to his debate appointments.
Newspapers published in early September showed that Trumbull was scheduled to deliver speeches in Lacon, Illinois, on October 5 and in Peoria on October 7. By late September, however, a newspaper in Peoria noted that his speaking engagement in that town had been changed to October 6.
In the local elections of 1858, Republicans won a majority of all votes cast in Illinois, but pro-Douglas Democrats retained control of the Illinois General Assembly. At the time, members of the General Assembly voted for and elected the state’s representatives in the U.S. Senate, and Douglas ultimately won reelection. Through the campaign, however, and in particular through his participation in the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, Lincoln gained recognition as well as standing within the national Republican Party.
