2Thomas Edes, Jr., and his wife Rachel gave William L. Saltonstall three promissory
notes totaling $3,112.50 and secured the notes with a mortgage on 146 acres in Tazewell County, Illinois. Thomas Edes, Jr. paid $400 but failed to pay the balance. Saltonstall retained
Lincoln & Herndon and sued in U.S. Circuit Court, Southern District of Illinois to foreclose the mortgage. The Edes failed to appear when the case opened in June
1857, and the court ruled for Saltonstall and awarded $3,122.59. The Edes failed
to pay the judgment, and Saltonstall bought the 146 acres at public auction in November
1857 for $3,315.62. Lincoln & Herndon received $50 for their legal services.
