Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of Illinois, that Our Senators in Congress be instructed and our Representatives requested to use their utmost exertions to procure the passage of a Law, at the present Session of Congress, declairing the Towns of Alton, Chicago, Beardstown and Shawneetown, ports of entry.2

1Jesse B. Thomas, Jr. introduced the preamble and resolution in the House of Representatives on December 9, 1834. The House referred the preamble and resolution to a select committee. The select committee reported back the preamble and resolution with sundry amendments, in which the House concurred. The House adopted the preamble and resolution as amended. On December 12, the Senate tabled the preamble and resolution. On December 13, the Senate took up the preamble and resolution, referring them to a select committee. The select committee reported back the preamble and resolution on December 22 with an amendment, in which the Senate concurred. The Senate amended the preamble and resolution by striking out the preamble, the word “aforesaid,” and all the words after the word “entry.” The Senate adopted the resolution as amended. The House concurred in the Senate amendments on December 24. On January 7, 1835, the House and Senate delivered the resolution to Governor Joseph Duncan for his signature. 2The issue of these ports of entry was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives on February 13, 1836, and referred to the Committee on Commerce. The U.S. Senate introduced their own resolution on March 2, 1836, and referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, doing so again on January 12, 1837. Nothing appears to have developed from either effort.
