William J. Bennett, son of Paulina T. Hill and brother-in-law of Benjamin F. Maupin, was a farmer. He moved from Ohio to Illinois around 1848, settling in Jersey County, where he was living in 1850. In 1854, Bennett purchased forty acres of public land on Bear Creek in Christian County, Illinois. In 1856, he married Columbia O. Radcliffe, with whom he would have five children. In 1860, Bennett was living and farming at Jersey Landing in Jersey County and had a personal estate of $1,200. Bennett and his wife also lived for many years in Madison County, Illinois.
