Jesse D. Blackledge was a prominent citizen of Pickaway County, Ohio, who had land holdings stretching from Ohio to as far east as Pennsylvania. In 1851, Blackledge moved from Pickaway County to Logan County, Illinois, where he purchased approximately forty acres of public land northeast of Broadwell and southwest of Lincoln. In 1852, Blackledge received a warrant for eighty acres of public land in what would become Chester Township, northeast of Broadwell and southeast of Lincoln.
