Lloyd L. Britton was a financier, merchant, hotelier, and businessman. He traveled Europe before settling in New York City and working for the counting house Fitch and Company. In 1838, he became the secondary partner in the investment and trading firm Scoville and Britton. He established business connections throughout New York and Europe, and the firm was successful for a time. After its dissolution, he struck out into the business world on his own and became wealthy. He owned Stanwix Hall in Albany, New York, and later owned the Everett House in New York City. He married Mary A. Ming, and together they had at least two children.
