Joshua M. Cantrall was the oldest son of William G. and Deborah M. Cantrall and the older brother of Adam M. Cantrall. Joshua moved with his parents from Ohio to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1824. Joshua joined his father in purchasing a large tract of land north of Springfield, and he established a 200-acre farm. In 1834, he married Sarah Cantrall, with whom he had eight children.
