Coler, William N.

Born near Mount Vernon in Knox County, Ohio, William N. Coler was a soldier, attorney, real estate investor, money lender, newspaper owner and editor, and military officer. Reared on the family farm and schooled in Ohio, he served in the Mexican War in Company B of the Second Regiment of Ohio Volunteers under Colonel G. W. Morgan. After the war, he studied law with Colonel Morgan, but moved to Illinois before completing his studies. He concluded his law education in the Bloomington, Illinois office of Amzi McWilliams, earning admittance to the bar in the fall of 1851. He then moved to Champaign County, Illinois, settling in Urbana and practicing law for a few years before relocating to Champaign, Illinois. He was law partners with Joseph W. Sim, Jr., and, later, with Jairus C. Sheldon as well. In 1852, while living in Urbana, he established the
