Daniel Gregory was a federal government official, county judge, and state representative. Gregory emigrated to Illinois in 1833, settling in Shelbyville. In October 1837, he married Julia A. Martin, with whom he would have three daughters. Gregory and his family resided in Shelbyville until 1846, when he moved to Vandalia, Illinois, where he worked as receiver of the U.S. General Land Office. Gregory remained receiver until 1849, when he won election, as a Democrat, as judge of the Fayette County Circuit Court. In 1852, he again received appointment as receiver, holding the job until the office in Vandalia moved to Springfield. In 1857, Gregory represented Fayette County in the Illinois House of Representatives. In 1859, Gregory joined with other Fayette County Democrats to found the Fayette Democrat. In 1860, he was engaged in business and manufacturing in Vandalia and owned real property valued at approximately $10,000, with a personal estate of $2,000.
