By February 1842, Hutchinson had established himself in Springfield, Illinois, where he worked as a cabinet maker and undertaker. He was also the proprietor of the Hutchinson Cemetery, a position he held until February 1861. In June 1848, Hutchinson married Mary Jane Montgomery in Island Grove, Illinois. In 1850, he owned $3,500 worth of real estate. By 1860, he owned $17,000 worth of real estate and $8,000 worth of personal property, and his household included one domestic servant.
