John T. Jones was a cabinet maker, army soldier, and wagon maker. Jones emigrated to the United States in September 1832, settling in Ohio. He lived in Cleveland and Columbus before moving to St. Louis, Missouri, making cabinets to support himself. Jones served in the U.S. Army during the wars with the Seminole Nation. In September 1840, Jones moved to Springfield, Illinois, where he entered the wagon making business. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Jones a detective in the U.S. Secret Service.

Jones married twice. Sarah Ann Lewis, his first wife, was from Radnor, Ohio. The couple had three children. In 1860, Sarah died, and Jones married Dorcas E. Ritter in September 1866 in Sangamon County. They had one child together
