Samuel R. Lowry was a farmer. Hailing from Londonderry (Derry), Northern Ireland, Lowry immigrated to the United States, settling in Pennsylvania. He married Rachel Bullock, a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with whom he would have six children. In 1834, Lowry moved west to central Illinois, settling first in Logan County before moving on to Rushville Township in Schuyler County. In 1850, he was farming near Rushville and owed real property valued at $3,500. By 1860, he owned real property valued at $2,000 and a personal estate of $650. In July 1860, he married Melinda Birdwell in Cass County.
