Prince, Edward

Edward Prince grew up on a farm in East Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York. He graduated from Illinois College in 1852, and that fall he became a law student in the office of Archibald Williams & Charles B. Lawrence in Quincy, Illinois. Prince earned his law license and at various times worked with Abraham Jonas, General James W. Singleton, and Bernard Arntzen. He traveled the southern states in 1855 and 1856 working as a land agent for Daniel Paullin and Gilpin & Rowland. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Prince joined the U.S. Army as lieutenant colonel in the Seventh Illinois Cavalry, earning promotion to colonel in the fall of 1862. He was twice wounded and mustered out of service in October 1864. At his death, he left an estate valued at approximately $300,000.

Prince married Virginia M. Arthur in 1867 and the couple had three children.
