Strocky, Frederick A.

Frederick A. Strocky was a public servant, businessman, and Confederate Army officer. Of Dutch ancestry, in 1841 he purchased eighty acres of public land in Stephenson County, Illinois. The next year, he purchased additional public lands in the same county. In 1848, he became sheriff and tax collector for Stephenson County. In 1850, he lived in Freeport, Illinois, was still county sheriff, and owned $5,000 in real estate. By 1858, he was one of the proprietors of the De Soto House, a hotel in Galena, Illinois, via his firm, F. A. Strocky & Co. That year he was also an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for the Illinois Senate and supported Stephen A. Douglas in the 1858 Federal Election. In May 1861, Strocky enlisted in the Confederate Army. He received a commission at the rank of captain and served in Company A of the Second Tennessee Infantry. He later received a commission at the rank of major and served until 1865.
