Stephenson County in northern Illinois was created by the Illinois General Assembly in 1837 out of parts of Jo Daviess and Winnebago counties. The same year, commissioners appointed for the purpose chose Freeport as the county seat. The county was named in honor of militia colonel and Illinois territorial delegate to the U.S. Congress, Benjamin Stephenson.
